If Everton get a positive result against Manchester City they may inadvertently guide the Premier League crown to local rivals Liverpool

There has been a suggestion that, now that Arsenal have all-but tied up fourth place thanks to their victory over Newcastle United on Monday, taking them four points clear of Everton, the Toffees may not have much to play for in the remaining two fixtures in the Premier League calendar.

Roberto Martinez’s side take on Manchester City at Goodison Park on Saturday, May 3 – a ground they have only lost twice in while returning a two goal per game average this season – but should they either draw or triumph against their visitors then the destination of the title will be back in the hands of their local rivals, Liverpool.

Would Everton players, the club, their fans want that – an open-top bus parade of the Premier League crown with red ticker tape driving up, down and all around Merseyside?

They could, after all, prevent it, so would they consider playing half-hearted at the weekend in order to deny Steven Gerrard et al from lifting this year’s trophy?

One Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher, answered that very question on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports: “No,” he said simply. “They won’t. They’ll play a proper game.”
