Despite finishing third for the first time since 2003 Jose Mourinho believes he needs only acouple of signings at Chelsea this summer. He has frequently made it clear that he needs
a new striker to come in, but claims that the club itself has good foundations and needs to change little to be title challengers to Manchester City next year. He adds only that if additional people leave, than they will then need to be replaced.
Chelsea do have one confirmed arrival from a signing made in January, Kurt Zoma from St Etienne. Mourinho has previously expressed an interest in former Inter Milan and Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli. Current links include Uruguayan Edison Cavani, currently with Paris St Germain, and Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa.
His current strikers, Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, and Samuel Eto’o, finished the season with just 19 league goals between them. This has been a source of complaint for Mourinho throughout the season, and he does make it clear that the team needs to be successful in the summer transfer market. However, he states that success is not meant to be about quantity, but about quality, that it is important to “make the right choice.”
