Lemony Snicket’s popular children’s books, A Series of Unfortunate Events, is to be adapted into a TV series.
The 13-book series concerns the fortunes of orphaned siblings Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire as they wend their way through a world of danger and misfortune.
The Guardian reports that Netflix have acquired the rights and the show will be produced in association with Paramount Television, the makers of the 2004 film adaptation, which starred Jim Carrey and Meryl Streep.
Snicket, the pen name of American writer Daniel Handler, will be an executive producer.
“I can’t believe it,” the writer said. “After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books.”
The series was published from 1999 to 2006 and more than 60 million copies of the books have sold worldwide.
