Samsung's Galaxy S8 “to spell the end for its screens”

If you’re a fan of the flat-screened phones which have dominated the market over the past decade, it’s probably best you cling onto your current model. Tech giant Samsung appears set to scrap the non-curved faces, with a senior executive at the company indicating future Samsung Galaxy smartphones may only be available with curved, dual-edge displays, just like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and recently released Galaxy Note 7, Digital Spy said.
Speaking to the Korea Herald, Samsung Mobile boss Koh Dong-jin said: “Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions [for the curved screen].”
With rival Apple yet to offer a curved screen design in almost a decade of iPhone models, the feature is already a hallmark feature for Sammy. And after the Note 7 became the first high-end model to ship without a flat screen equivalent, this could prove to be the future as we move into the eighth generation of the S range, Digital Spy said.
“Samsung will not likely get rid of the flat-screen Galaxy S smartphone model right away, but if the market response is positive with the Note 7, it would surely serve as a cue for Samsung to focus only on the Edge model,” a market analyst told the Herald.
While the functionality of curved screens is somewhat questionable, there’s no doubt they look prettier than standard box-offs, Digital Spy said.
