Pregnancy occurs when a female egg or ovum, is fertilized by
a male cell, or sperm.
If the ovum is fertilized it then buries itself in the
lining of the uterus; it is thick with much more blood.
As the ovum grows
roots, it is fastened firmly to the thickened lining of the uterus. Eventually,
it forms the placenta or after – birth.
The mass of roots from the ovum is the
placenta.
The baby’s large blood vessels pass down the cord and divide
into many tiny vessels which enter the branches of the placenta through which
the baby gets food and oxygen from the mother’s blood in the lining of the
uterus.
